Conferences & Seminars

Is permission needed?

Because of the vastness of our University, there are numerous conferences and seminars taking place all over campus on a daily basis. Oftentimes, a presenter would like to hand out photocopies of relevant articles and/or enhance presentations utilizing Powerpoint or traditional overhead projections of copyrighted material. Unfortunately, because many factors and variables come into play in determining whether or not copyright permission is needed, such as size of audience, nature and purpose of the conference or seminar, number of articles and amount of material to be copied, and frequency of the conference or seminar, it is impossible for us to develop generic guidelines to help you answer your copyright questions. Rather, each item would have to be evaluated using the fair use factors discussed in the copyright laws and guidelines section of our site. Our office would be glad to help you during this evaluation process and obtain permissions on your behalf when needed.

Fees

If permission is deemed necessary for material used in conferences and seminars, the Copyright Permissions Center charges a fee of $5.00-$10.00 for every rightsholder contacted. This service fee, along with any royalties charged by publishers, would be billed back to the department requesting permission through a CUFS number.
